After I cut G's hair, we took off to Potsdam. Three yrs ago when we visited last, the city was in huge reno's and so this time it was in all it's supreme beauty. Potsdam is the city where all the officials, Stalin, Churchill and Eisenhower, gathered to agree upon and sign the Potsdam Agreement where, after the 2nd war, the German land was divided and became two unique governments. It is resplendent in old, ornate buildings and castles with large gardens. We were able to do the entire city on foot and after 4 hours, we S Bahned it back to Berlin.
In Berlin by the Brandenburger Tor, a huge monument that was the delineation line and area between Old east and west Germany, there is a place that is our favourite thing to visit and stay awhile in all of Berlin. Off to the side of the gate (Tor) is a room that is 100% sound proofed and in it are chairs, soft cushions and only one piece of art hanging on the wall.
This room is about 15 by 20 feet and is called "The Stille" room. No talking or noise of any kind is permitted.
We spent only 20 minutes this time in meditation before we were kicked out for closing. It's an amazing experience each time we go as, in the silence, you can better understand the history of the past and the changes made in this particular city.
We trammed it back to the hotel for coats and then walked again to the festival where we found new Italian friends, toasted to the birth of our new baby girl and then got thrown out again at closing time. The strangest thing we found that is wonderful in this, the
biggest city in Germany, is that right on the sidewalks, on the major street called Kurfurstendamm, are many of the glassed-in show cases you see in the photos which all have a goodly assortment of clothes, watches, shoes etc. on display. No one steals or breaks into them. It's a very sophisticated city where most people are dressed like the rich or ready to party. Amazing! Leaving, our favourite city, tomorrow for Warsaw.
